Compact excavators, or mini excavators are the little brothers of the earth moving family of vehicles. But although they may be smaller than their counterparts, they are still capable of great things. A compact excavator can be wheeled or tracked. Manufacturers differ in the sizes of compact excavator that they make available. They can weigh just under 1500 Kg, or (3250 Lbs.), this will have a bucket size of around 0.036 cubic meters, (or 0.048 cubic yards). The width of the compacts excavators tracks for a vehicle this size will be around 90 cm, (or 35 inches). However, there is a compact excavator on the market that has tracks that are able to be adjusted down to around 70 cm (or 28 inches), which enables it to be moved through a doorway. Compact excavators have an advantage over their larger counterparts because of the smaller size. For example, they can carry out tasks with less disturbance of the site around them. As the operator does not have to reset the stabilizer, they can be quicker and less complicated to operate (and so it is easier to train someone to use this vehicle), and there is greater visibility. Compact excavators are designed for excavating and digging trenches. Compact excavators usually have three main parts. These are the workgroup, the house, and the undercarriage. The workgroup is made up of the dipper (arm), the attachment in use, for example a bucket, and the boom. Connected to the front of the house, it enables the workgroup to be pivoted to the left or right. This can be used for digging trenches parallel with the tracks. The house is the part of the vehicle that contains the engine, hydraulic pump and the operators compartment. The undercarriage is the tracks and all the associated components. Some compact excavators come with a standard backfill blade, which can be used for general work including backfilling, grading, levelling and trenching. As with large excavators, the compact excavator can be modified with hydraulic attachments, which means it can be utilized to accomplish most tasks that are required of it. These attachments include a bucket, a breaker and an auger as can the large earth moving equipment, making them a more easily managed piece of machinery. This is useful if a job only requires the occasional use of such machinery, and lends itself to many different industries that a large excavator would be unable to do. For example a landscape gardening business might benefit from such a machine. A compact excavator is just as likely to be used by someone digging out their back yard as on a construction site. Many compact excavators are actually rented out to homeowners who want to make improvements such as landscaping their gardens or digging foundations for a garage. The smaller models are ideal for this purpose as they are easier for a lay person to handle. |
