Is excavator hire more cost effective than purchasing the equipment?

To answer this question there are various points that need to be taken into consideration. Only when you have summed up all the options can you make an informed choice.

If you are thinking of hiring an excavator, then you need to find an outlet that deals with hiring out large plant equipment. Many of the main outlets that sell excavators and other heavy equipment, also hire out machinery, so they can be a good place to start your search.

When you telephone or go to the outlet, ask about the choice of hire solutions for your needs. The wider the choice, the more likely you are to find a hire program that is tailor made to meet your requirements. However, often, it can be difficult to know exactly just what your requirements are.

Some outlets that hire out excavators and other large plant machinery will have specialized staff who can suggest what you will need by your description of your needs. Many will come out to the site and complete an extensive job analysis to make sure that you hire exactly what you need. It may be worth paying a little extra for this service as in the long run, you know that you will end up with the right equipment for the job, and also, that you will not be hiring equipment that you will not need.

You also need to consider whether you are looking to hire the equipment for long or short term. It may work out more cost effective to purchase an excavator than hire one for very long term projects. But you must also consider that, in some long term hire agreements, maintenance may be included in the price. This could save you a lot of money if it also included replacement spare parts, that are fitted by a company mechanic.

If you do not need to use an excavator on a regular basis, it may be worth considering whether you can hire an excavator and an operator. Many of the large outlets can accommodate this. The advantage of this is that you do not need your operator to undergo any training programs before they can begin work on a project. Again, it is worth sitting down and doing the figures before you decide.

As well as the large equipment, it is possible many outlets provide compact excavator hire. This is particularly useful and cost effective for people who are undergoing renovation work on, for example, landscaping a garden, or digging out foundations for something. Obviously they will not want to purchase the equipment, and may only need it for a few days. Again, it is worth considering whether you hire the equipment only, or if you can hire the equipment with an operator.
