Excavator Parts

To get the most out of an excavator it is worth investing in some of the specialist excavator parts or attachments. This will enable the excavator to be used for a number of different tasks, and so make it a more cost effective piece of equipment.

Some of the specialist excavator parts available include:

Clay spades - these are most commonly used for digging trenches where the ground is heavy, sticky or wet.

Tilt Ditchers - these allow up to 40 degrees of tilt in all directions. The are commonly used for finish grading on projects such as golf courses and landscaping. Tilt Ditchers are usually available for machines for 2 to 30 tonnes.

Grapples, or Grabs - usually easily available for all excavators. They provide a cost effective solution for most material handling tasks. Grapples do not need any additional hydraulic rams or services. They use a simple bucket ram operation, which moves the 2 tined section. The 3 tined static section is held by the con-rod, which is attached to a bracket, welded to the dipper arm. When buying a grapple or rod for your excavator, ensure that all the necessary con-rods, brackets and pins are included.

The two main types of grapples or grabs are boxed tine and solid tine. Boxed tine, usually supplied as 'rock' grade is able to stand extreme applications, for example, rock handling, sea defence projects and demolition.

Solid tine grapples are usually cheaper to buy than the boxed tine, and are not made to the same 'rock' specs. Common uses for this type of grapple include, handling general debris, sorting materials for scrap, secondary demolition and waste handling.

Grip Talon - these can sometimes be used instead of a grapple for light general work. This is a light attachment and it can be used for a variety of tasks including, landscaping, demolition, forestry, skip hire, waste transfer and recycling. This attachment is readily available for all sizes of excavators.

Block Grabs - these eliminate the need for manual handling of heavy materials such as concrete slabs. When purchasing a block grab ensure that is has the following: easily adjustable opening, replacement rubber pads, automatic trip mechanism, easily adjustable opening, and that it has been tested and certified to comply with the rules and regulations relevant to your country of residence and work. When buying a block grab as a specific kit, it should include the block grab unit, link chain and bracket to fit it to your excavator.

The Boom Broom - this is a simple but effective excavator part. The lower edge of the boom broom can also be used for scraping hardened dirt or mud. Boom Brooms are commonly used for landscaping, utility contracting, paving and driveways, and waste management.

Whatever the task, there is sure to be an excavator part to attach to your excavator to get it done.
