Effective Excavator Training

An excavator is a large piece of equipment, capable of carrying out many tasks, but in the wrong hands it can also cause a lot of damage. Remember, the equipment is only as good as the person operating it. So it makes sense to make sure that all your operators receive adequate instruction through a verified excavator training program. A recent report highlights an explosion that occurred on a construction site in 2004. Five workers were killed as a result and four more received severe burns. This accident was the result of a backhoe operator striking a high pressure petroleum line while digging a trench. It occurred near a high school, so fatalities and serious injuries could have been much higher. When the fuel ignited, it triggered an explosion that sent up a 60 ft fireball. This and other cases of fatalities highlight the need for an adequate training program excavator operators. When purchasing a training program, make sure that it complies with all the necessary OSHA regulations regarding the equipment and industry where excavators are used. Excavator training can be delivered in various forms: „h P.C. based heavy equipment simulators, that are available for excavators, hydraulic cranes and other heavy plant equipment. „h Videos and DVDs „h Site and Productivity Analysis training „h Hands on excavator training that is delivered onsite by qualified instructors. Training courses are run by various training providers throughout the country, and can range from one to four days in length. All training programs should comply with federal OSHA regulations as well as any state OSHA regulations. It is possible to purchase training packages to use on site. These can include presentation handouts, tests, instruction videos and planning sheets. Of course, if you are going to purchase one of these training packs, you must make sure that you have a qualified training professional onsite to deliver it. If you do not have a qualified member of staff in your company, then it is possible to hire a trainer for the time involved on a daily or hourly basis. It is not only the large excavators that require trained operators. Anyone who operates a compact excavator, even for a relatively small project should take advantage of the many excavator training programs available for these smaller pieces of equipment. It can take as little as four hours to complete one of these training course, and may save your life, or a life of those around you when you are operating the machine. This could be particularly of use to you, if you have hired a machine, but are not sure how to operate it. These course usually include instruction on basic operator safety, inspection and operation. They are run in accordance with the current OSHA regulations and the equipments manufacture guidelines. |
