Excavators And Their Uses
|
Excavators are large multi purpose, heavy engineering machines especially designed for moving earth and other tasks. They are mostly used in the construction industry for heavy tasks such as lifting and transporting materials, digging trenches or ditches, general landscape work as well as heavy demolition tasks. Using a variety of attachments on the excavator means it can be used for many different tasks including foundation work. Other uses of excavators include river dredging and the lifting and placing of pipes, and with a hydraulic attachment, they can be used for cutting brush. Basically an excavator is a backhoe and a cab that are mounted on a rotating platform. The pivot is attached to the undercarriage that can have wheels, but is more likely to have tracks. The pivot and undercarriage enable the rotating platform to turn through 360 degrees and for this reason, excavators are sometimes simply called 'a 360.' The term 'excavator' is usually applied as a general term for vehicles that are designed as digging equipment, and they come in a variety of sizes. Attachments that can modify the excavator so that they can be used for different tasks include a bucket, an auger or a grapple and a breaker. A hydraulic attachment called the tiltrotator means that the excavator can be used as tool carrier. Excavators have been utilized more increasingly on the construction site, or other places of work. This is largely due to the extra features of a quick attach mounting system which aids and simplifies the mounting of attachments. These multi purpose and invaluable pieces of equipment are usually used alongside other large plant machinery which compliments the tasks that the excavator performs. These include bulldozers and loaders. Some of the smaller compact wheeled versions of the excavator have a horizontal blade similar to a bulldozer, that is attached to the undercarriage of the vehicle. These can be used for pushing material that has been removed, back into a hole. Types of excavator include, cable, material handling, walking, hydraulic, wheeled, chain and compact. Each has its own specific applications that make it invaluable for a large cross section of tasks. The most commonly used excavator is the industrial excavator. These are used for a variety of tasks including land clearing, road building, site digging, excavating and removing bulky waste materials. They are also used for moving other heavy machines. As well as the large excavators there are mini, or compact excavators which can carry out tasks where a larger piece of equipment would be unable to. Their sizes vary as does the scope of tasks they can carry out. They are useful for such tasks as landscaping, digging out trenches and foundations for smaller projects. With so many used and kinds of excavator available, there is sure to be one for any task you have in mind. |
